Hundreds remain without power, many report damage after severe thunderstorms

Hundreds of people remained without power Thursday evening after severe thunderstorms rolled through the area Wednesday evening.

Several counties, including Butler, Darke, Preble and Warren counties, had more than 1,000 power customers in the dark as of 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to the AES Ohio and Duke Energy outage maps, though Montgomery County had by far the most outages, with more than 15,000 power customers without electricity around the same time.

At around 8:05 p.m. yesterday, outage numbers continued to climb, with Montgomery County continuing to lead with more than 21,000 customers in the dark, followed by Greene County with more than 15,000 power customers without electricity.

AES Ohio said there were more than 66,000 customers without power at its peak.

“Crews continue to work round the clock to safely and quickly restore power to the remaining 11,500 customers,” they said Thursday morning. “Thank you for your continued support as we work to get everyone back on.”

At around 8:55 p.m. Thursday, hundreds of power customers remained in the dark, especially in Clark and Montgomery counties, which had 1,700 and 1,600 customers without electricity, respectively, according to the AES and Ohio Edison outage maps.

The following are the numbers of power customers without electricity by county, according to the Duke, AES and Ohio Edison outage maps, as of 8:55 p.m. Thursday:

Butler: 52

Champaign: 1

Clark: 1,709

Greene: 594

Miami: 267

Montgomery: 1,684

Preble: 374

Warren: 92

Reports of storm damage soon followed the severe thunderstorm reports, with many trees reported down across the area from smaller limbs to large whole trees.

Butler Twp. police reported Dog Leg Road was closed between Kinmont Road and Interstate 70 due to downed power lines and tree limbs on Thursday morning.

One report to the National Weather Service in Wilmington said that a large tree fell on a house in New Lebanon around 6:57 p.m. Wednesday.

A large tree was reported down near Union, bringing down power lines around 7:50 p.m. Wednesday.

Downed high-voltage lines led to I-75 being closed in both directions around Vandalia starting about 7 p.m. Wednesday.

An emergency manager in West Elkton in Preble County reported around 6:40 p.m. Wednesday that more than 15 trees fell and closed Greenbush and West Elkton Gifford roads, knocking down multiple power lines.

Broken branches were down in the road on West Alexandria Road in Madison Twp., Butler County.

In addition to many broken or damaged trees, one report at 6:44 p.m. Wednesday said that a corn crop was damaged by winds near Covington in Miami County.
